| Councillor Diane Holmes: The Legacy | |
| When Queen Victoria chose Ottawa to be Canada's capital, she challenged Canadians to create a city of international stature. And at the heart of that city is Somerset Ward, now the setting for the federal precinct. Diane took up Victoria's challenge in 1982, to make Somerset Ward the jewel in the capital's crown. With uncommon wisdom and foresight, Diane began building such a community in the very shadow of the Parliament of Canada. She insisted on more and more tree-planting and roadside greening , green space, all for the health and well-being of residents, pushing back any hint of creeping urban blight. Searching out every nook and cranny, her Safety Audit assured there would be no darkened and foreboding places to steal the night away. She pressed on with the "Blue Box" program for voluntary recycling that would lessen any burden the ward might otherwise dump on its rural friends. Diane relentlessly sought more and more housing in Somerset Ward, till today we are seeing an explosion of new and welcome residents renewing and re-energizing our community. We can attribute today's burgeoning downtown residential and business communities in large part to Diane's unexcelled ability to inspire, and to coordinate diversity. Our continually improving public transit service provides reliable and environmentally responsible transportation, and Diane has been at the leading edge of its implementation for almost two decades. With an eye to culture, Diane's energetic support for diverse projects such as Cultural Festivals has given us all the best cultural life in the Region. By striving to preserve Centretown's cultural, natural, and architectural heritage, Diane has ensured that every resident can live a rich and fulfilling life, the envy of every other Canadian. |
Diane's supreme wisdom and foresight are matched by her seemingly infinite compassion. She has always had the best interest of each and every resident at heart. There are endless examples of her close attention and appreciation of our individual trials and tribulations. Acknowledging a small gift from a citizen whose mother tongue is Czech, she not only took the time to send a thank you card, but she added a family greeting in Czech! She hosts the CCCA's Annual Christmas Tree Trimming Party in her own home, donations going to buy new trees and tree guards for our streetscapes! She worked tirelessly with social action groups throughout the Region to maintain shelter and services for seniors, women, disabled persons, and the poor. Diane inspired programs to develop better and more co-ordinated in-home services for her cherished resident seniors. She established the Women and Urban Safety Committee, leading to the creation of the Women's Action Centre Against Violence, resulting in the dedication of the unique women's monument in Minto Park. She promoted the ongoing rebuilding of ward-wide infrastructure and services such as sidewalks, shopping areas, roads, sewer and water - and spun-off job creation at the same time! Any list of examples of Diane's attention to the needs of the individual goes on and on and ...Every single visitor to Canada's Parliament Hill has walked in Somerset Ward. From 1867, every Prime Minister of Canada, and every Member of Parliament, has left foot prints in this ward - Diane's Ward - the jewel in the crown of Canada's Capital. Victoria would be pleased. Thank you, Diane, we all love you, and we will miss you, every one of us! |
| A retrospective. As she leaves office. Veratika Canada helped helped honour her by publishing a website http://veratika.com/dianeholmes as part of the large effort by many folks who organized the September Celebration Party. | |

| Stories Sought from Clients | |
| Dateline: January, 2001. We are thinking about starting a Veratika Canada Online Stories page. We would seek out Canadiana books and articles on women's experiences in Canada in the past - aboriginal women, pioneers and visitors - written by the protagonist, from a personal perspective. These engrossing stories would aim to turn your mind away from the cares of the day by enabling you to relive the adventures of Canadian ancestresses. | The section could also include references to hardcopy antiquarian and in-print books, videos, and online excerpts and stories. We would be interested in your reactions to the stories - would you care to write us a review? Send us your comments by email - may we publish you? Can we include your name (first name, city and country only)? |

| Scones Contest Heating Up | |
| Dateline: January, 2001. Have you tried our Scones Contest yet? Real Scones (not the scone wannabee Tea Biscuit!) can an integral part of any of our relaxation rituals, such as MistyForest, Surface-of-the-Sun or TikaMeadows. However, there appears to be confusion about what a scone really is. Today, so many other things are called scones! | Unfortunately, now no one is sure just what a scone is. So, lets here from the experts (you, of course and your learned culinary colleagues). And lets pin this down. we hope there can be prizes in the future as we zero in on the 'ultimate scone', the scone to die for! |
